Music at St. John

The choirs of St. John enhance the beauty of our worship experience and provide a way for lovers of music to become more involved in the St. John community. The musicians of St. John have continued the rich heritage of Anglican music. We present music from the Renaissance period to the present. The outstanding acoustics of the sanctuary greatly encourage acapella singing, which we take full advantage of. The choirs normally present their gifts at the 10 a.m. liturgy, as well as special services. We presently have three choirs: the St. John Choir, the St. John Bell Choir, and the St. John Kid’s Choir.

The St. John Choir is our main choir; singing for the 10 a.m. liturgy as well as for most special services. Choral Evensong is offered once or twice a year as part of the St. John’s Concert Series. We presently meet every Thursday night from 6-7:30 p.m., and also before any of the services.  We always welcome new members.  The ability to read music is very helpful, but not necessary to sing with us. The willingness to learn to sing is the most important requirement.

The St. John Bell Choir is another very dedicated group of musicians that greatly add to our worship experience. The Bell Choir meets on Wednesday nights from 5:15-6 p.m. Some music reading ability is necessary, even if on a very rudimentary level. We have 3 octaves of Malmark handbells and Choirchimes, so there is always plenty of room for a few more ringers.

The St. John Kid’s Choir sings a few times throughout the year. We rehearse Sunday mornings, directly following the 10 a.m. service. The age range varies from time to time, but generally extends into the early teens.
